The Advancement Project identified some frightening realities:
- In Los Angeles, 850,000 children live in violent crime areas
- In Los Angeles, 290,000 live in high gang crime areas
- Of children living in high crime areas, 90 percent are exposed to violence as a victim or witness
- Of children living in high crime areas, 27 percent show symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
These children are much more likely to be drawn into lives of violence, crime, and gangs. This mirrors findings from a decade ago on the south side of Chicago.
As a part of a comprehensive strategy, GAP can provide case management services, counseling, home visits, and referrals for these children and their families when they are identified through the classroom program. Through a network of collaborative agencies, GAP provides expert help for areas of need outside its competency.
GAP averages one hundred cases per year. For more information on our case management resources or referral process, email us at contact@gangfree.org or call (888) 293-9323.
