Caring for Our Communities

The Gang Alternatives Program recognizes that helping young people starts with helping the communities in which they live and learn. We care about our communities, and have made community clean up services a fundamental part of our core values to help residents actively resist gang activity in their neighborhoods.

Over the the past eight years, we have worked with city government and local agencies to improve and expand our services, so that we can help more communities. We've worked with community leaders, business owners and schools officials to ensure that we are addressing the unique needs of every community. And most importantly, we have worked with young people, their families, and the residents within each community, to empower them with resources that can make a positive difference in their streets.

Community clean up services include:

As Director of Community Clean Up, I have the privilege to serve with hard working, dedicated staff members who spend their days cleaning up graffiti and improving the neighborhood for residents. GAP Community Clean Up Crews eliminate over six million square feet of graffiti annually and perform over 440 clean ups. We also remove over 950,000 pounds of illegally dumped materials a year. In addition to staff members, GAP uses volunteers referred by the courts to assist in clean up efforts. If you are interesting in volunteering, please call the GAP office or local Volunteer Center.

Our operations in CD 14 and CD 9 are now housed in the downtown Arts District, and we are happy to be a strong part of the vibrant Arts and Boyle Heights communities. GAP works with Mr. Huizar and his staff on many important Boyle Heights events, and we look forward to collaborating on even more enterprises. Assistant Manager Isidro Ruan is in charge of the facility there.
